The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, on Monday paid a courtesy visit to the Katsina State Government House, where he called for greater collaboration between security agencies, government authorities, and citizens in tackling banditry and terrorism across the state and the country at large.
General Oluyede, who was received on behalf of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda by the Deputy Governor, Malam Faruq Lawal Jobe, said the visit was part of the military tradition of paying respect to traditional and political leaders while strengthening civil-military relations to foster peace.
In his remarks, the Army Chief commended the people of Katsina for what he described as their “special support” to security operatives stationed across the state.
“Katsina is known for its hospitality and support to the Nigerian Army. However, we must also commiserate with families who lost loved ones in recent attacks. The incidents are tragic and painful, but they have strengthened our resolve to ensure peace and security in this state,” Oluyede said.
He emphasised that security is a collective responsibility, stressing that while troops are committed to protecting lives, citizens must also contribute, particularly by providing credible intelligence.
“The reality is that we are fighting fellow Nigerians. The enemies are among us. It is our duty to identify these elements and ensure justice is served. Without unity, we cannot achieve lasting peace,” he added.
General Oluyede confirmed that he had held closed-door discussions with state leaders on security challenges and assured them of renewed military operations to restore peace in Katsina and beyond.
“I can assure you that the President is committed to a safer Nigeria. But we must work hand in hand with the people. The army belongs to the people, and with your continued support, we can achieve security and stability nationwide,” he stated.
On his part, Deputy Governor Jobe thanked the Army Chief for the visit, pledging the state government’s continuous support to the military and other security agencies.
“The government and people of Katsina appreciate the sacrifices of the Nigerian Army and other security forces. We remain committed to supporting your operations in safeguarding lives and property,” Jobe said.
Speaking to journalists after his meeting with state officials, the Army Chief reiterated that his visit aimed to condole with victims of recent attacks, appreciate community support, and assure residents of intensified counter-banditry efforts.
“This is a huge loss for all of us. It is painful, but I assure you that the Nigerian Army will redouble its efforts to protect Katsina and every part of this country,” he vowed.
The visit comes at a time when Katsina continues to grapple with security challenges, particularly in rural areas. Last week, residents of Mantau in Ƙarfi District of Malumfashi Local Government were thrown into mourning after gunmen attacked worshippers during early morning prayers, killing several people.
The massacre shocked the state and sparked fresh outrage, with community members urging security agencies to step up decisive measures to end the recurring killings, kidnappings, and destruction of livelihoods in Katsina and across northern Nigeria.
